The following are public health and environmental issues that Dryden Aqua are trying to combat, any support you can offer would be appreciated

1. Swimming pools

Swimming is one of the best possible exercises that you can take, and it should be encourage among all age groups.  However if the pool is not operated properly then it can be as healthy as chain smoking cigarettes, refer to New Scientist report click here or the European Respiratory Society. If you enter a swimming pool or a leisure centre and you can still smell the chlorine after 2 minutes, we recommend that you do not use the facility. The smell is not caused by chlorine but a chlorine reaction product called Trichloramine.  This chemical stings your eyes, and if it stings your eyes it will also be causing lung damage. In the case of young children under 5 years old, trichloramines strips off the protective mucous layer in the lungs and predisposes children to infection or a sensitized reaction so if the child is then subsequently exposed to a chemical, or pollen or dust mites etc, this may elicit an allergic response which can develop into asthma 10 years latter.  The infuriating aspect of all this is that we know that it has been  happening  over the last 30 years (try a Google search on asthma and swimming pools for information) and we know how to solve the problem.  Dryden Aqua in Scotland with support from the European Commission under the Life Environment initiative, solved the problem and the solution was simply to replace the sand in swimming pool sand filters with AFM media.

However the UK Health Protection Agencies, Government Depts etc etc; can not recommend that local authorities use AFM in public pools because this will be in breach of State Aid regulations which would give an unfair advantage to Dryden Aqua.  The same restrictions do not apply with agencies out-with the UK,  so we now have a daft situation that organizations in Germany, Switzerland & Spain are promoting AFM, but in the UK it would almost be against the law to advise local authorities that there is a solution to this problem.   I do not know what is happening,  however next time you visit a health centre or swimming pool, ask the pool operate the following questions;

• The free chlorine level should be below 0.5ppm,  if it is higher do not use the pool
• The combined chlorine level must be less than 0.2ppm,  if it is higher do not use the pool
• The THM  level must be below 20 ppb, don't bother asking them because they will not know, however asked them if they use Ultra Violet disinfection, if the reply is yes then don't use the pool, because UVc light generates THM`s ( TriHaloMethane = chloroform) which is carcinogenic.
• The water should have a blue colour, and in a 25m pool you should be able to see clearly to the other end of the pool underweater, if you cant see through the water there is a problem
• If you can still smell the chlorine reaction products after 2 minutes do not enter the water
• If  your eyes sting, then leave the pool.

2. Drinking Water

At least 6% of all human disease in Europe is caused from drinking the water supplied to us by the water companies. Bottled water is often not much better.  Most of our drinking water is treated by aluminium chemicals to help clarify the water prior to filtration with sand filters.  The problem is that the water companies often get the dose rate wrong,  or the sand filters suffer from channelling, so periodically high levels of aluminium find their way into the public supplies.  It is believed that high levels of aluminium, or exposure to aluminium over a long period of time may predispose us to  brain damage leading to Alzheimer's.

Aluminium flocculants are useful in water treatment and they do serve a purpose, however problems with their sand filters allows the chemical to pass through the filters and into the public supply. In addition to aluminium  there will  parasitic protozoa called crypto and giardia in you water.  In the UK you run a 1 10 chance every year from contracting cryptosporidiosis.  If you are young, elderly or if you immune system is weakened then the disease can prove fatal. Crypto is still responsible for 3% of all disease in Europe.

There will always be worm hole channels passing through sand filters,  this really can no be avoided when sand is used in the filters.  Water will always contain some organic matter, especially if the water source is from a lake, river or reservoir.  The treated water will be filtered, the problem is that chlorine reacts with organic matter to form organ0 chlorine complexes collectively know at THM`s (trihalomethanes) the most common of which is chloroform. The water industry set an upper limit of 100 ppb,  not because this is a safe level,  but because this is the minimum level that they can safely achieve.  THMs are carcinogenic and are implicated in causing many forms of cancer.

It is permitted to have list 1 chemicals at detection level, as well and herbicides and pesticides in mains water.  There are often abstraction points down stream of sewage out-falls. The list of problems goes on and on.  The water companies are complying with the drinking water directives, the problem that we have is that the standards set down by the EEC directive are very slack, and have been designed more to suit the water companies as opposed top the public.

Dryden Aqua have also designed a new water filtration media called AFM ( Active Filter Media) details available on www.AFM.eu that solves the problem of wormhole channelling  in the municipal sand filters.  So we have a means at our disposal to dramatically improve the performance of he treatment works and eliminate many of the parasites and chemicals that cause us disease and infection.  However Dryden Aqua is only a small SME company and has little Government influence,  so we would welcome any support to disseminate our message.
